Due to the failure of the existing Permarock insulated overcladding system during
high winds in January 2007 Vertical Access Ltd working in conjunction with Clancy
Consulting Ltd undertook a panel fixing survey and testing, using rope and cradle
access, in February and March 2008.
The survey identified that the metal cladding fixings required to secure the rendering
were either missing or not installed in sufficient numbers. It was agreed that there
was an urgent requirement for remedial work to stabilise the existing insulated overcladding
system on 6 high rise buildings.
It was proposed to cover the existing overcladding with galvanized mild steel mesh
sheets held in place through the cladding to the original sub-strate with mild steel
anchors. The mesh was designed to restrain the existing overcladding to prevent
further loss due to high winds.
Over 18,000 m² of wire mesh was used to cover the external elevations of 6 no. high
rise buildings and required the installation of 41,500 mechanical anchors in brickwork
and 16,500 resin anchors into no fines concrete.
The works were carried out by Vertical Access Ltd over the spring and summer of 2008
which proved to be one of the wettest and windiest periods of recent years.
